Welcome back for another episode of Reality Life with Kate Casey.

Federal Heights is the kind of neighborhood that feels protected from the outside world.

Tree-lined streets sit at the base of the Salt Lake City foothills.

Large family homes, quiet nights, a close-knit community where people know each other, where children

feel safe in their bedrooms, and where danger feels distant, almost unimaginable.

Elizabeth Smart was raised there. She was the fourth of six children, an older sister, a middle child,

deeply bonded to her family, musical, bright, thoughtful,

14 years old and just days away from graduating from middle school. Her life was structured

by routines, school, family dinners, practicing the harp, and the certainty that tomorrow

would look much like today, until it didn't. In the early morning

hours of June 15, 2002, Elizabeth was jolted awake by a knife pressed to her throat. A man's

voice ordered her out of bed. Her younger sister Mary Catherine woke too, frozen in fear,

watching as Elizabeth was forced through a window

and into the darkness. Mary Catherine remained motionless, terrified to make a sound. Hours later,

she ran to her parents. Elizabeth was gone. The man who took her was Brian David Mitchell,

someone the family had unknowingly encountered before.

Elizabeth was forced on a grueling hike into the foothills directly behind her home, where Mitchell had established a campsite.

There, his wife, Wanda Barzee, washed Elizabeth's feet and conducted a warped marriage ceremony.
