Summary

Throughout the annals of true crime you'll often hear certain murders being described as "The Crime of the Century". Back in 1924, the press dubbed the kidnapping and murder of a 14 year old boy named Bobby Franks with that title. But what was especially unusual about the crime wasn't the murder itself. But rather, the two suspects the police arrested. They were a couple of wealthy 19 year old college students named Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, and when they confessed to the crime they shocked the nation by telling everyone they had done it simply for the thrill of it all. 0:43.8	When, in fact, it wasn't even the worst crime that occurred that decade.

0:51.8	That title might possibly go to the axe murders of six members of the Moore family,
0:55.8	along with two house guests in Velisca, Iowa in 1912.
1:00.8	Those brutal murders took place just 12 years earlier than the murder of 14-year-old Robert Bobby Franks in 1924.
1:08.8	Or just a couple years earlier on March 31st, 1922, in the small Bavarian community of Hinter Kyfek,
1:16.8	six members of the Gruber family, along with their housekeeper Maria, were also brutally slain by some still unknown person.
1:24.8	An individual who evidently lived with the family's corpses for some time after they were dead.
1:30.8	It seemed like every few years some brutal murder came along that managed to capture the public's imagination.
1:37.8	And of course, the press was more than happy to sensationalize the crime in order to sell papers.
1:43.8	So it came about that in 1924 the kidnapping and murder of Bobby Franks became front page news for a time.
1:51.8	But the story of Bobby Franks' murder didn't become so well known because of the gruesome details of the crime, though.
