Populations have been controlled by food, limited hunting, collisions with vehicles, fond

That's according to Ken Bevis of the Washington State DNR.

One of these threats were serious enough to limit deer numbers and the population boomed

This year, however, residents and biologists are reporting that the deer have all but disappeared.

The Washington State DNR believes the culprit is a deadly and contagious disease known as

adenovirus hemorrhagic disease or AHD.

AHD is usually fatal and fauns seem especially susceptible.

It spread through close contact or exposure to bodily fluids like saliva or feces.

It poses no threat to people, pets or livestock, but it looks like it's done a number on this
