Bakers, fresh for everyone. On the afternoon of March 4th, 1905, a police officer in Kingsland, New Jersey began

receiving reports of shots fired and a dead man in an apartment building in an

Italian neighborhood. The officer and a doctor went to the building to see what

had occurred. There was a general store in the first floor and above that was a

tiny apartment. The door to the apartment stood half open. In one corner of the first room was an old rocking chair with a body sitting in it.

The man's legs were crossed and he held a briar pipe in his right hand.

His head was slumped forward and a dark line of blood ran down from his forehead

onto his white shirt.

The victim's name was Joseph Santa, and everyone in Kingsland knew who he was.

He was the town's richest resident, although, if he asked around, no one would tell you

exactly what the man did to make all his money.
