It is also extraordinary because the West has basically spent the last several decades

attempting to wean itself off of natural oil and gas, sort of.

When I say sort of, what I mean is we have made ourselves

significantly more dependent, except in the United States, on outsourced forms of carbon-based

energies. So there's a sort of environmental nimbism that goes on in the first world, where we do

need the gas. We need the heating oil. We need the gas at the pump. We need all those things.

But we don't want to see it done right here.

We would prefer that our environment remained pristine, but we would really like it if Venezuela just drilled. We would love it if Russia just drilled. It just brought up that oil and natural gas. But nonetheless, fracking brought down the price of oil dramatically. Fracking was a deeply impactful American technology that made America significantly less dependent on foreign sources of oil and natural gas and actually created by 2019 an energy surplus in the United States where we were exporting more oil and natural gas than we were importing.
