After the war, she ended up in the possession of Germany.

From there, she was given to the French as part of an exchange for reparations,

and once in France, she was refitted and dressed in new colors, rechristened, and on October 2, 1950, sent back to sea. Le Liberté was the premier transatlantic ocean liner of the French fleet. She was a singular object, 889 feet of steel,

pride, and refinement. And in 1961, she washed herself west for the last time, leaving for

New York's November port as Soviet and American tanks stood

at attention in Berlin, heightening tensions and pointing towards a cold future.
