The Isle of the Dead.

The all-absorbing darkness of night was something Mark could never get used to, despite

how much time he spent on this wretched island.

It was a suffocating darkness, accompanied by a maddening soundlessness.

Not even the creatures of the night made a sound.

No crickets, no bats, no coyotes, nothing.

The wooden shack where he spent his evenings was old and irregular. It smelled musty and had a

perpetual layer of dust that persisted no matter how much he swept, which was less and less as time went on.

He longed for some sort of white noise, something to help him sleep at night.

Had the hut been built closer to the shore, the waves would provide such a respite from the

deafening silence, but that simply wasn't the case.
