Summary

It’s about time we talk about survival rifles. What’s the deal with these things? They come in all shapes, sizes and even calibers, but yet never really seem to catch fire. In this episode, Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss a bit of the history of survival rifles, many of the different kinds, what cartridge is the best for survival situations, what optic works best on a survival rifle, what the heck are we even preparing to survive in the first place, and much more! As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on Instagram @vortexnationpodcast

We've got Jimmy here on the mic, marked my left, and Ryan Muckenhear an esteemed colleague and frequent

0:26.3

guest on the podcast here.

0:28.7

And we're going to probably talk about some calibers, I have a feeling, which we talk about

0:32.0

frequently with you, Ryan, but we're going to talk about the topic of survival rifles actually today.

0:38.0

Cool. And this one is a I really like this topic now when we had our podcast on subguns for

0:46.6

example I enjoyed talking about that one in particular because anytime you know

0:51.9

as a firearms enthusiast, yes there are, you know, as firearms owners and

0:58.5

users, there's all the training, we have to do there's the practical applications of them,

1:02.0

but sometimes you just have to boil it's the practical applications of them but sometimes you just

1:03.0

have to boil it down to the firearm enthusiast level which is just the fact that

1:06.9

guns are cool just like cars get you from A to B but there are certainly a

1:11.4

culture that loves them for what they are, how they work,

1:14.7

their mechanicals, their functions, and all the innovations that have happened behind them.

1:18.3

You could probably say the same thing for, oh, I don't know, selling machines or refrigerators, anything.

1:25.0

But survival rifles are up there as I actually kind of would describe them a little bit similarly to subguns in the fact that we haven't seen a whole lot of different looking radical designs when it comes to the main battle rifle for example.

1:46.0

Everything from the M1-Goran all the way to the AR-15 or the MK-18 or whatever they call it now that the military uses.

1:54.0

Granted, we went from a woodstock to polymer, furniture and whatnot,

1:58.0

but actually over that really long course of time,

2:00.0

the individual changes that led us to where we are now weren't all that

2:03.8

radical. I guess from the M14 to the M16 kind of, but then from the M16 until now

2:08.6

not that radical. But when you look at survival rifles just like when we looked at subguns all of them look different.
