When you're in the coaching profession, you take a little bit from each guy you work for,

and one day when you become the head man, you implement those things. Now I always found

that scheduling was one of the most underrated parts of the job. While it is a team effort with

the administration, these are some rules I would live by when it comes to picking opponents

outside of our conference. Rule one, never schedule the triple option team. I don't care how bad

they are. It takes away valuable practice time because it's like learning in old extinct language

like Latin. You'll most likely see it once a year at best and possibly in a bowl game which has

its own practice time before you even play in the bowl game. Rule two, if I'm going to play a

neutral site game against a big opponent, we're going to do it in my state. Look at LSU playing

Florida State in New Orleans or Georgia playing Oregon and Atlanta while it may count as a

neutral game, we all know it's a de facto home game. Rule three, never schedule the school that

is built off of religion. I love watching schools like BYU, Notre Dame and Liberty, but nobody

plays harder or cares more than a team that feels like they're playing for the afterlife.

That's motivation a speech could never provide. Rule four, playing a good opponent in the opening

week is a good thing. It gives you a barometer of how good you really are and can set the table

for what to expect in a competitive conference. Like a good bakery, you need your fair share of

cupcakes, but playing them game one can be fools gold and rule five and the most important

do exactly the opposite of whatever Jim Harbaugh does. Those are the rules. Trust me on this.
