Josh whispered to himself as he felt around for the set of keys he just dropped on the steps,

trying to get back into his residential building at school.

Getting to stay at Dalton Hall was a privilege, and he didn't want to mess that up by waking up the whole building at 2 in the morning.

His hand, shaking from the extreme cold, scraped through the snow on the stairs as he felt around for the keys.

Even the moon was no help to him, as it hid behind a layer of clouds while the snow fell.

Finally, the freezing metallic keys touched his fingers and he quickly grabbed them,

once again fumbling with the ring until getting it under control. He stuck the key in the lock

and went to twist it, but it wouldn't budge.

He double-checked to make sure he had the right key and tried again.

Still, the lock wouldn't move.

Had the lock frozen?

He prayed internally that it hadn't.

The nearest payphone would take him 20 minutes to walk to in this weather, and he was so

tired, he wasn't sure he'd make it.
