Summary

If you’ve ever struggled to find the line between teaching your children life skills while also not putting them in dangerous situations, then this episode is for you.

In it, we explore what the true purpose of promoting autonomy in our kids is from a biblical perspective and how we can do that while fulfilling our God-given parental roles of protecting and discipling.

Practicing discernment in parenting is hard in lots of areas—but especially ones in which there is so much noise about the psychological ramifications of we do/do not do something just so.

Be encouraged we have great agency, as Spirit-led parents, to make judgment calls in this area of responsibility and safety that work for our families.

Hello and welcome to the MS for Mama podcast. I'm your host, Abby Halberstadt,

0:09.3

happy wife, Mama to 10 Bible Believing Christian. And I have a bit of a hot button topic on my mind today.

0:17.1

Based on my reader responses on social media, I don't know how hot button it will be with my audience,

0:21.7

but it's still a really good conversation that I want to have about giving kids responsibility

0:26.9

while still using discernment and how we do that. But before we dive into that, I want to highlight

0:32.2

our podcast sponsor Votebird Music Academy. Voteberg Music Academy is a wonderful way for your kids

0:36.6

to learn music from the comfort of their own homes, to share lessons between siblings. They don't make you sign up with a different account for a different sibling. And you can do that for as little as $30 a month using my code, Emmis for Mama 20 for 20% off each month that you're enrolled in their lessons in fiddle, ukulele, mandolin, guitar, and piano. They also have a jingle jam

0:55.6

challenge, which is a really fun way for their Voteberg Music Academy, community of families

1:00.2

to show off their carol playing abilities, and your kids can jump in on that as well and just be

1:05.2

motivated to learn. That is MS for Mama 20 at Votebergmusicacademy.com. We'll put everything in the show notes.

1:12.1

Okay.

1:12.5

So I wanted to tackle this topic of childhood, independence, autonomy, responsibility,

1:20.3

kind of whatever synonym you want to put in there.

1:24.3

Because, one, I already have a podcast on giving your kids responsibilities through chores

1:30.9

in your own home. And if you have not heard that podcast, I will link it in the show notes.

1:35.3

I will have Ezra do that. But this is a conversation that goes beyond the walls of your home

1:40.9

and or at least it can into the community, into things that would

1:46.9

affect your kids like going to the grocery store and paying for things or ordering at

1:52.0

restaurants or or walking to school alone or things like that where it's become something of a debate about how much, at what age, to what extent,

2:06.7

and what it's accomplishing. So my podcast today stems as many of my podcasts do from

2:12.6

conversations that I've had online with my social media followers, specifically on Instagram.

2:17.1

And for a couple of weeks in a row, I have addressed this concept that a very, very small
