Friends, James Cooper and James Kezeris were two twenty-something college buddies from

Great Britain in the middle of a three-week vacation in Sarasota, Florida, a place renowned

for its white sand beaches and warm Gulf waters.

The British Tourist took advantage of the Nightlife too, bar hopping in downtown Sarasota

on April 16, 2011.

It was two a.m. and the establishments were closing down for the night.

No party can last forever, even in paradise.

The hours of bar hopping took its toll on the men.

Carly Brownfield, a bartender at the Gator Club, testified that one of the men was so

intoxicated he rested his head on the bar for a moment.

When the Gator Club closed the two men staggered out and headed north, the opposite direction

from the condo they were supposed to be staying at, closer to the beach.

Were they drunk and lost?

Or perhaps looking to buy some marijuana?

It was a mystery as to why they ended up at the courts, an old rundown housing projects

in one of the poorest parts of the city, with a long complicated history of segregation.

This neighborhood was a place few tourists ventured to, and certainly not at this hour.

At the center of the whole case was this terrible thing that's always haunted Sarasota.

It's segregation.

It's a small place.
