As we begin this episode, early 1949, the last of the three great campaigns of 1948-49, the

Ping Jin, is over and practically all of China north of the Jansse is in CCP hands.

As 1949 dawned, there was this hope among many in China that their country's long slide from greatness that began in the 1830s

was finally coming to an end.

For more than a century the Chinese people had witnessed and experienced national suffering on a mass scale and political

humiliation at the hands of more powerful nations. The cities and the countryside had witnessed some of the 20th century's worst cases of

man's inhumanity to man.
