Summary

I strongly urge you to listen to this episode. These are my opening remarks to this year's Mises University program at the Mises Institute. I discuss two sets of ungrateful people. The first: socialists. I go into detail about the improvements in the lives of everyone, but especially the desperately poor, under the free market. The numbers are frankly miraculous. And all these folks can think to do is shout at their employers through bullhorns.

Then I take on those libertarians who spend their time denouncing Ron Paul, Murray Rothbard, Walter Block, and other prolific and productive libertarians. This section is especially savage, but not gratuitously so. Just the right amount of savage.

The most important place in the world to me, basically, is the Meises Institute. And there's been a little bit of,

0:55.3

you know, there's some inside baseball in this talk, let's just say. But the main theme of the talk

1:01.0

is in gratitude. And I'm arguing that socialists are guilty of this when they fail to appreciate

1:07.8

the absolutely mind-boggling progress that's been made for mankind and for the poor in

particular by capitalism. That's just downright ingratitude. But then I also talk about some

1:19.2

libertarians who are grotesquely ungrateful toward benefactors and great contributors to this movement.

And kind of the implication of what I'm saying, and I'm going to censor myself here with,

I'll say a word that you can hear in front of your kids, I guess, but not a word that you'd

1:39.1

I'll just say this.

1:40.3

It's more important not to be a crappy person, even than it is to be a libertarian.

1:46.6

Just don't be a total piece of crap is what I'm trying to say.
