You know, one of my favorite movies of all time is The King's Speech, starring Colin Firth as King George VI, Queen Elizabeth's father during World War II.

0:59.0

He suffered from a terrible stammer that prevented him from being able to speak publicly, and in the movie there's this wonderful scene. It's a night before his coronation, and he's really angry at his George who goes by the nickname Birdie.

1:15.0

That's what everyone in his family calls him. Birdie was going to be coronated the King the next day, and he found out that Lionel was never properly trained as a speech therapist or had the proper credentials.

1:27.0

And so he began to doubt all the speaking techniques that he learned from Lionel, and he began to panic realizing now he's not going to be able to give speeches as a king during a time of war.

1:38.0

Now, even though Lionel wasn't credentialed, he was historically a brilliant speech therapist, right?

1:45.0

And he knew this was a moment to show Birdie.

1:48.0

So as Birdie's yelling at him inside the cathedral, whether he's going to be coronated, he had his back turned to Lionel, and he noticed Lionel wasn't responding anymore.

1:57.0

So he turns around only to see Lionel sitting in his throne, his monarchical throne in the cathedral, and Birdie screams at him, and he says, you can't do that.

2:06.0

Get up. Get out. And of course he's stuttering. You know, you can't.

2:10.0

And Lionel's like, what's the problem? It's just a chair. And Birdie's like, no, it's not. It's saying Edwards chair the chair of the seat of every king in Queen of England.

2:18.0

And Lionel just interrupts and says, I don't care how many royal arses inside on this chair. And Birdie says, listen to me. And Lionel says, no, I don't have to listen to you by what? Right. Do I have to listen to you? And Birdie shouts and says, well, by divine right, if you must, I'm your king.

2:34.0

Lionel said, no, you're not. You told me you don't want it. You don't want to be king. Why should I listen to you? And all of a sudden, Birdie just screamed out because I have a voice.

2:46.0

I deserve to be heard because I have a voice.

2:52.0

And he suddenly realized he stopped stammering. And Lionel got up from the chair and he looked at him and he calmly said, bowing his head, yes, you do.

3:03.0

You do have a voice. You have such perseverance, Birdie, the bravest man I know. And you're going to make a bloody good king.

3:13.0

What are the things that I love so much about what I do here on this broadcast each and every day is that I have a platform to help you find your voice.
