0:00.0	So I am going to Italy and I want to kind of take you with me.
0:08.4	So let me explain a little bit about the concept of these episodes because they're going to be
0:12.1	a little bit different and I'm excited about them. I think they're going to be really fun.
0:16.0	I mentioned I'm going to Italy. I'm going to Italy on my honeymoon to Florence, Rome and
0:20.8	Tinkuatari, which is a sort of group of five coastal towns. But in particular in Florence, I am
0:29.6	just inordinately excited about visiting the Uffizi Gallery and looking at some of the art that
0:34.8	they have there and visiting this home of really the birth of the Italian Renaissance. And it
0:41.2	occurred to me as I was getting ready to go on this trip that the episodes which will air while I'm
0:46.0	on it could deal with some of the stuff that I'll be experiencing over there so that we can share
0:51.2	that a little bit. And it also occurred to me that we have not talked as much as I would like
0:55.9	about visual art. I've gotten a lot of requests to do more of that, visual art and music.
1:00.8	And I wanted to honor that and I also wanted to incorporate visual art into kind of the
1:06.1	panoramic view that we are starting to assemble on this show of how the West has developed over time,
1:13.3	how the different cultures within it have interacted and grappled with one another. And I thought
1:18.3	it would be a really great opportunity to kind of focus in on Florence specifically because it is
1:24.7	this place of just crucial importance in how we understand the history, especially of the Renaissance.
1:32.1	And Renaissance art. But in that way, it becomes really kind of the hinge of modernity. And
1:38.3	if you want to put it that way, it becomes this kind of link between the medieval period,
1:44.4	the so-called dark ages, which as we're going to get into here, we're not all that dark at all.
1:49.9	But the so-called dark ages and this rebirth of classical learning of humanism,
1:56.4	the advent of modern science now kind of spotted history at best. But I'm going to talk a little bit
2:03.2	about some of the themes that emerged that motivated all of that and that motivated the development
