The establishment is whining and crying as their preferred speaker candidate cannot

seem to get over the finish line. But the conservative stalwarts have every right to

spike McCarthy for any reason they choose. Policy, trust, because they just don't like

the cut of his jib. Doesn't matter. The job of the house speaker is to wrangle cats,

basically, through a combination of love, fear, and persuasion. The speaker of the

house needs to create consensus among his members. The speaker vote is the first test

of a would-be leader's ability to do that. And if the man can't get the votes, then he
