Summary

Guest Info/Bio: This week we speak with Dr. Richard Beck. Richard Beck is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Abilene Christian University. He is the author of Unclean, The Authenticity of Faith, The Slavery of Death, Reviving Old Scratch, and The Gospel According to Johnny Cash. Richard's published research also covers topics as diverse as the psychology of profanity to why Christian bookstore art is so bad. Richard leads a bible study each week for fifty inmates at the maximum security French-Robertson unit, and any given week Richard drives the van, preaches or washes dishes at Freedom Fellowship, a church feeding and reaching out to those on the margins. Finally, on his popular blog Experimental Theology Richard will spend enormous amounts of time writing about the theology of Johnny Cash, the demonology of Scooby-Doo or his latest bible class on monsters. Guest Published Works: The Authenticity of Faith; The Slavery of Death; Unclean; Reviving Old Scratch: Demons and the Devil for Doubters and the Disenchanted; and Trains, Jesus, and Murder: The Gospel According to Johnny Cash.Guest Website/Social Media: www.experimentaltheology.blogspot.com Special guest music on this episode provided by: Tall Heightswww.tallheights.com Twitter: @tallheights Facebook: @tallheights Instagram: @tallheightsEnjoy the songs? And believe it or not, we are actually in the month of December already. So we are almost to the end of 2020. I know I'm excited for the end of 2020. 2020 has got to be better, right? I know a lot of you are probably feeling that way as well. It's been a weird, weird year. But anyway, before we finish off the year, I've got a couple episodes that I'm really excited to release, including this

1:00.3

one that I actually recorded a while back, and I'm excited to finally release it. It's with Dr.

1:06.5

Richard Beck, who we've had on before, for those of you who have listened to us from the

1:11.1

beginning, or maybe you're hardcore and you went back to the beginning and listened in

1:15.9

chronological order. But we did an episode a while back, probably about three years ago with him.

The book was called Reviving Old Scratch, and it was a book about the devil, and always a fun

1:27.0

topic. So he always, he always picks

1:29.2

interesting, uh, interesting topics. So this one is based on his new book, Trains Jesus and Murder,

1:34.8

the gospel according to Johnny Cash. And it's just really interesting look at Johnny Cash's life

1:40.3

and some of the causes he was involved in that I certainly wasn't aware of, like the

1:45.4

plight of the Native American and prison reform and issues that were really important to him

1:50.3

at the time that he used a lot of his, you know, his celebrity to help bring to light and to help,

1:56.8

you know, make changes. So really, really cool. So very excited to release this one for you

2:03.4

guys to hear it. The musical guest this week, you know, if we could afford to get the rights to

2:08.1

2:12.7
