Summary
Backpacking: Glen Van Peski, Gossamer Gear Founder, on Ultralight Philosophy, Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Bikepacking the Great Divide, International Backcountry Adventures, and Life Lessons from His Book Take Less. Do More. Glen Van Peski is a retired civil engineer who accidentally started the ultralight backpacking gear company Gossamer Gear. Besides an avid ultralight backpacker and bike packer in the U.S. and abroad, he’s an entrepreneur, author, speaker, philanthropist and dishwasher. He recently wrote take less. do more. Surprising Life Lessons on Generosity, Gratitude and Curiosity from an Ultralight Backpacker, after he realized that the lessons he learned from almost 50 years of lightening his pack weight also had applications to living a more fulfilling life off the trail.
His extensive outdoor adventures include hiking most of the Pacific Crest Trail, exploring the backcountry in Japan and Europe, and bikepacking along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR). Glen lives in Bend, Oregon, with wife of over 40 years Francie, and is the father of two grown sons.

| 0:00.0 | Hey folks, welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast. I'm your host, Mason. Today's episode, I'm |
| 0:11.5 | going to have to apologize again. I'm running a little late this week. We had a newborn, |
| 0:17.2 | or we had our third son recently, thankfully everything went well happy healthy but i am |
| 0:25.3 | much busier than i anticipated and i'm like you know i'm going to get you know decent paternity leave |
| 0:30.6 | and uh you know i got the other two kids they're going to be going back to school we're going to |
| 0:34.6 | be fine no i'm i'm busier now and i've ever been i been. I don't know how I fit a job in between here before this. And so, yeah, the show has |
| 0:44.2 | unfortunately had to be put on the back burner as, you know, just things pop up and I have, |
| 0:49.4 | you know, more immediate family-oriented things to take care of. So thank you for your patience. |
| 0:53.9 | I am |
| 0:54.6 | slowly getting back on track. And in a big way, this episode with Glenn Van Pesky is a great, |
| 1:04.1 | you know, I know it's late, but it's absolutely worth the wait. This episode is one that I |
| 1:09.1 | anticipate is going to stick with me for quite a while. |
| 1:12.6 | One, because Glenn was such a great storyteller and so generous with his time, and I really got a lot |
| 1:18.1 | out of this conversation. But two, this book, Take Let's Do More, which is the title of this episode, |
| 1:24.5 | is amazing. And you might think the title of this episode's a typo. Why is Take |
| 1:29.6 | Less, do more in lowercase, and why is there a period right in the middle? Well, that is |
| 1:34.0 | stylized after the title of the book, and that's all intentional as well. And you might be able to |
| 1:40.2 | come to the conclusion that what Glenn is talking about is his love of ultralight backpacking. |
| 1:47.7 | So what he learned over time, which we'll talk about, is that the less you take on an |
| 1:53.1 | adventure, especially when you're carrying it on your back, the more you can do, the farther you |
| 1:57.9 | can go, the more help you can provide others. There's all sorts of |
| 2:02.8 | benefits to taking less on an adventure. And so what I love about this story and this podcast |
