I finally found somebody I know well and whose judgment I trust to come on the show here and talk to us about Catalonia and independence from Spain.

And that person is Marco Bassani, who is a professor of the history of political theory at the University of Milan in Italy.

He is the author of Liberty, State, and Union, the Political Theory of Thomas Jefferson.

Marco, welcome to the show. All right. Thank you. It's been a really, really long time since I've seen you.

And it's too bad. But of course, you're in Milan and I'm in the U.S. and I don't travel there much and you

don't travel here much. But the miracle of Skype makes possible this wonderful conversation. And to find out that you
