Summary

Jerome joins us for his fourth interview on ASP! What’s also unique is that this is the third time we’ve interviewed Jerome in person. As you’ll hear, it’s a totally different type of conversation than a virtual interview.

Today we’re talking about the importance of giving back on your adventure knowledge. All of us that adventure have an obligation to at least introduce and invite those around us to also get out there. Don’t make your adventure pursuits about you and only you. However, it’s totally fine to have solo adventures, but make sure you share that knowledge, experience, and life-changing power with others at some point along your journey.

Jerome, a world-class solo sailer, is going to tell us some stories around his first big attempt to share that knowledge with a few up and coming sailors.

I'm your host, Mason.

Today we're talking to Jerome Rand.

0:12.7

You probably recognize him.

0:13.8

He's one of the, probably like the first person that's been on the show four times, like new episodes.

0:20.8

And what's cool

0:21.3

is three of those interviews, including today, was in person. Pretty rare that I get to do an

0:26.8

in-person interview. It's a huge treat because it's a totally different dynamic. And Jerome and I

0:32.9

have become friends. Well, I mean, I call him a friend. I don't know if he'd call me a friend. I'm just

0:38.3

kidding. I know he would. But every time he comes to town, which is like once a year, he's just

0:43.7

passing through for something. We get together and do an interview in the studio. And this one was

0:49.9

awesome. We didn't have a ton of time. We made it happen. And we're going to talk about

0:55.3

the experience of an adventure or someone who knows a lot about something and is like, okay, do I

1:01.6

just keep doing this thing? Or do I start to use this experience to help the next generation

1:07.6

of enthusiasts of adventures or the youth? you know, there's, you know,

1:14.7

the need to leave a legacy. And so Jerome's going through that. And he just had a new experience.

1:20.5

If you don't know, he owns and has operated his sailboat for years and done some massive adventures,

1:26.9

which include sailing around the world, literally around the entire world, unsupported.

1:33.8

He's attempted a northwest passage crossing, crossing the Atlantic and up and down the coast of the U.S. many, many times. He's done so much sailing.

1:46.9

And a lot of other things like through hiking the Appalachian Trail. So he's got these chops and

1:51.6

this amazing understanding of the ocean. You can really hear him. When he talks about it,

1:55.7

just like, wow, this guy reads the ocean like a book. I'm amazed by people that can do that. And so you might not be
