Summary

On June 19, 1865, union general Gordon Granger landed in Galveston and issued some general orders. His General Order No. 3 informed the people of Texas that all the slaves in Texas were now free. Since then, "Juneteenth" has been celebrated in Texas as the anniversary of emancipation. Juneteenth became an official Texas state holiday in 1980. In 2021, the U.S. followed Texas' lead and now a fateful day in Texas history is a holiday for the entire nation. Learn the history behind the emancipation proclamation and General Order No. 3 from the author who literally wrote the book on Juneteenth in this episode of Wise About Texas.

Evan Stern and Evan it turns out is a very accomplished stage performer but what I noticed is he's got a great eye for his

0:54.9

story and so what he does with vanishing postcards is travels around Texas to

0:59.4

places that he's curious about and he gets kind of the real story behind him he interviews

1:04.3

the owners the customers the employees and he puts it all together and what I

1:09.9

consider a very well-produced performance really it's it's like going on a road trip

1:15.8

with him he's been to an old Austin bar that that I will confess I've been to and it was

1:21.3

neat to learn a little more about that. He went to a Fredericksburg

1:24.4

peach orchard recently, which is something that's all of us who have had Hill Country peaches

1:29.8

are very interested in. He went to a check dance hall up near temple that

1:33.7

kind of thing and he's really like I said he's taking you along on a road trip so it's

1:38.5

really kind of a fun podcast to listen to if you're like me and you like driving

1:42.1

around Texas.

1:43.0

Because so often we go on these road trips and we don't stop and see what we're driving by,
