for the Tom's River New Jersey rock band Skid Row. Together we take a deep dive into the

writing, recording, and inspiration behind their 1989 smash hit single

18 in life taken from their self-titled debut album.

I told Rachel that I always felt Skidro had a lot more to offer

both musically and especially lyrically

than most of their 80s and early 90s counterparts,

18 in life being a prime example of this. The imagery and

storytelling within the lyric is great and highly relatable. We talked about

producer Michael Wagner's involvement and how he was the perfect person to take

their great ideas and expound on them,

improving the parts that were already awesome and weeding out the parts that weren't.

We both agree that the best producers work as arm chair psychologists, getting into the

psyche of the musicians and making the music truly come alive. It was cool to

hear Rachel talk about first hearing the mix come back from the song and being

totally blown away. After all, this was their

debut album and he had previously never heard his band sound as massive and as great
