Summary

Theologian and author Greg Boyd joins Adam and John to wade into some hot topics including: The myth of christian nationalism pacifism Doubt/deconstruction Open theism and much more Greg Boyd is an internationally recognized theologian, preacher, teacher, apologist and author. He has been featured on the front page of The New York Times, The Charlie Rose Show, CNN, National Public Radio, the BBC and numerous other television and radio venues. Greg received his Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary (summa cum laude 1988), his M.Div. from Yale Divinity School (cum laude 1982), and his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota (1979). He was a professor of theology for 16 years at Bethel University (St. Paul, MN) where he received the Teaching Excellence Award and Campus Leadership Award. Greg is the co-founder of Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul, Minnesota where he serves as Senior Pastor, speaking to thousands each week. Greg has authored or co-authored 20 books and numerous academic articles, including his best-selling and award-winning Letters From a Skeptic and his recent books Repenting of Religion and The Myth of a Christian Nation. His apologetic writings and public debates on the historical Jesus and the problem of evil have helped many skeptics embrace faith, and his writings and seminars on spiritual transformation have had a revolutionary, freeing impact on thousands of believers. Greg passionately believes that faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but that the mind and heart were made for congruity. He boldly defends a Christian faith that embraces science, rejects religion, transcends politics and nationalism, and that calls for a radical, socially engaged form of discipleship defined by the self-sacrificial love of the Cross. Greg and his wife Shelley have been married for 36 years. They have three children and five grandchildren and live in St. Paul, Minnesota. One more thing: in his spare time, Greg plays drums for Not Dead Yet, a Twin Cities cover rock band that donates all of its proceeds to a non-profit organization called Kòt a Kòt (Haitian Creole for “side by side”), a home in Haiti for at-risk girls. We are your hosts. I'm Adam Narlock. I'm John Williamson.

And today we have something I'm really pretty excited about here, John, because I think this is at least the first time, not in the history of the podcast, because we've got other people we've

0:33.5

interviewed, but the first one we've released, that is directly a result of listener

0:40.1

participation. So this guy wasn't on our radar. No. We, I mean, I'd heard, I'd kind of

0:48.3

heard of them, but when people, when we started kind of asking, like, who should we talk to? Who should we get?

0:54.6

Who should we invite onto this show who's good at providing provocative viewpoints, stirring things up,

1:03.2

rupturing some things, allowing for some different perspective, encouraging intellectual discourse

1:09.0

and different viewpoints? Everybody's like, Greg Boyd.

1:11.7

Oh, yeah.

1:12.1

Greg Boyd.

1:13.4

We're like, we better check this guy out.

1:15.4

So then we connect on Twitter.

1:17.1

Yep.

1:17.7

And boom.

1:19.5

Like, we get to talk to him right now.

1:21.6

Yeah.

1:22.6

This is amazing.

1:24.1

And he is, it's funny, and I think I talk about this during the episode, but after just checking out his book, Benefit of the Doubt, I mean, it's funny how Taylor made this guy is for what we're doing. You were freaking out a little bit. I was. I opened this book, and I'm like, did I read this book and didn't realize it before we started this podcast? I love it. Yeah, incredible. There is nothing better than when you pick up a book or listen to something and you resonate

1:48.4

so much with what's going on. It's almost like you're on the same page of somebody that you

1:54.2

didn't know was there before. It's a really comforting, eerie feeling. It was a little weird.

2:01.8

A little weird.
