Summary

Laura Richards analyses and deconstructs the murders and attacks on lone women committed by Peter Sutcliffe (known as PS throughout the series) in the north east of England in the 1960s and 1970s. This case happened before Laura started her career at New Scotland Yard. It was the very reason her unit was set up. Listen and find out why Laura believes this is one of the most misunderstood cases of our time and why we should stop referring to this serial killer as The Yorkshire R***** Join Laura each week in the intelligence cell as she behaviourally breaks down each attack and highlights which cases she believes to be linked, why PS did what he did and how he was allowed to get away with it for so long. You won't want to miss this. #HerNameWasWilmaMcCann #HerNameWasEmilyJackson #HerNameWasIreneRichardson #HerNameWasDebraSchlesinger #HerNameWasPatriciaAtkinson #HerNameWasJayneMcDonald #HerNameWasJeanJordan #HerNameWasYvonnePearson #HerNameWasHelenRytka #HerNameWasVeraMillward #HerNameWasJosephineWhittaker #HerNameWasBarbara Leach #HerNameWasMargeruiteWalls #HerNameWasJacquelineHill #HerNameISAnnaRogulskyj #HerNameISOliveSmelt #HerNameISTraceyBrown #HerNameISMarcellaClaxton #HerNameISMaureenLong #HerNameISMarilynMoore #HerNamerISAnnRooney #HerNameISDrUpadyaBandara #HerNameISMoLea #HerNameISTheresaSykes Sourced Clips https://twitter.com/i/status/1327217063010721794 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kMhnKX9xmI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuxVdf46sJk Learn more about your ad choices. There are going to be some graphic details throughout this podcast series. Unfortunately it comes with the territory. Murder is distressing. Victims being killed and harmed is a truly terrible business. It's harrowing and haunting.

Across my career I've noticed a pattern, rarely do people remember the victim's names. They tend to get rubbed out and become footnotes in their own murders.

0:52.0

So before I even begin I want you to remember them and together let's honour them.

Hashtag her name was Wilma McCann, Emily Jackson, Irene Richardson, Deborah Schlesinger, Patricia Atkinson, Jane McDonald, Jean Jordan, Evonne Pearson, Helen Richter, Vera Millard, Josephine Whitaker, Barbara Leach, Marguerite Wars, Jacqueline Hill.

And what about the 23 children that grew up without their mother, their victims too? And the brave and courageous women who survived, let's remember them right here right now before we do anything else.

Well what about the other women he attacked? Because there were others, many others, and we're going to get to them.

2:00.0

But it was really important for me, well for us, to start at the place that matters the most and ensure that these women and children are not footnotes in their own cases, overshadowed by him.

2:14.0

And in talking about them, we have to talk about him, the man who brutally killed and silenced at least 14 women forever, and this man attacked countless more, we just have to find them.

2:29.0

So in a sense this is a case, which is a who done it and a why done it, and a forensic deconstruction of how he did it and how he got away with it for so long.

2:39.0

Come join me Laura Richards, Criminal Behavioral Analyst, former New Scotland Yard, as I reexamine and analyse this historical case with an experienced and contemporary lens, and throughout the some folding dynamic investigation, we're going to understand just how important that is, why this case matters so much and why we must listen to the women. On November 13th, 2020, Peter Suckliff died in prison, age 74.

The news headlines announced all over the world that one of the UK's most notorious serial killers had died of COVID.

I read most of the reports with interest, followed by growing anger and disgust. The father most people know his name is disturbing.

3:38.0

Or they know him by the moniker, the Yorkshire Ripper, which to me is even worse, in fact it's completely nauseating.

3:46.0

I'm intentionally not going to say the R word going forward, and I'll let you know why momentarily.

3:52.0

Why I felt a growing sense of anger was that barely any of the news reports listed the victims, the women that he murdered or those who he attacked and had survived, the very reason he was in prison serving 20 concurrent life sentences.

4:06.0

In fact, Suckliff was one of the few men in the UK who would never be released from prison.

4:12.0

Most people know his name, but barely anyone I speak with present day can remember any of the victims names.

4:19.0
