A great day if you like following American politics at its most fervent and enthusiastic

and unpredictable and straight out weird.

There was the second night of the Democratic Convention last night. We will be talking

about that. We'll be talking about that with three outstanding reporters who were there, including

Peter Baker, the Chief White House Reporter for the New York Times, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post, who is a humorist who has plenty to joke about today.

And David Drucker from the dispatch, they're all there at Chicago, and they seem to have survived the pro-Has rally outside the DNC. This is one of the

biggest stories of the convention, which by the way is now half over because there's only

tonight where the featured speaker is Tim Walls. And then I know it's made be premature to say it, but I think it's undoubtedly true.

What is going to be the most decisive speech of this campaign for better or for worse?

Because that's tomorrow night.

That's when the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, Kamla Harris, will deliver her acceptance speech.

And she could easily fall into a trap of the acceptance speech being clumsy and too long and boring and hollow and if it is that then the momentum that she has

been enjoying this campaign is going to be dissipated there was a problem it seemed to me last night

with Barack Obama now Barack Obama is a pro he is a very fine public speaker. He has,

like many public speakers do, including the former president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.

Obama has, like Trump, a tendency to go on too long. And the last third of his speech last night, it seems to me,

undermined the effectiveness of what he had to say. The clearly, the most outstanding and

adept speaker who connected, I think, most forcefully with the audience last night was Michelle Obama.

And this again, remember all those fantasies that people were talking about how Michelle Obama

was going to secretly replace Joe Biden, that she somehow was going to be the Democratic nominee.
