It is a federal holiday. It is a holiday in states all across the country.

There are some questions that people have about what the proper way to celebrate Juneteenth.

Should it be a festival, a celebration, or should it be a more mournful and sad day?

The basis for Juneteenth, Condoleezza Rice actually sent out an X message.

And she pointed out on June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas,

and freed the last enslaved people in the Confederacy.

When we celebrate their freedom, we celebrate America itself.

That's a good and quick explanation of what the holiday is supposed to be about.

But it is fascinating to think that it was so many weeks after the civil war was

over and after the south had lost the civil war and this is also part of the process they had just passed.

And again, this has to be kept in mind.

It was not the Emancipation Proclamation that ended up freeing four million slaves.

They have now raised, by the way, the estimate.

It always used to be 3 million that people estimated of a population in the country of 32 million total.

It was about 3 million who were enslaved.

Actually, the more recent research says it was closer to 4 million.

So, okay, those people were freed not by the Emancipation Proclamation,

because the Emancipation Proclamation applied only to southern states
