nation on God's Green Earth, and it is not greatest nation on God's green earth and it is not a

nation that is in irreversible decline or is falling apart or has a skyrocketing crime rate or has

an inextricably broken economy that cannot find a path back to prosperity.

So why do Americans feel so incredibly gloomy about the economy?

Whose fault is it?

Catherine Rampel has been a guest on our show before.

She is a writer for the Washington Post who specializes in economic issues and other crucial issues facing the public.

She is educated at Princeton, and she has been a special correspondent for the PBS News Hour and a contributor

to Marketplace on NPR.

Catherine, your most recent column, American voters are wrong about the economy.

Nearly everything Americans believe about the economy is wrong.

Whose fault is it? And your answer would be? Everyone. So I think, just to clarify, the direction

in which public opinion appears to be wrong is always toward the negative.

So, for example, most Americans think the economy is shrinking. In fact, GDP has been growing

for the better part of two years. We're outpacing almost all of our peer countries, you know, other advanced countries.

In fact, we are besting the forecasts made about the economy back before the pandemic began.

If you look at what the forecast said we would look like, circa 2024, we're doing better than even those.

Same deal with other metrics like unemployment.

About half of Americans think that unemployment is at a half century high.
