Today we're going to talk about the power of perseverance. Now Webster says to persevere means to persist in anything undertaken and to maintain a purpose

in spite of difficulties or obstacles or discouragements, but to continue steadfastly.

You see the difference between someone who's successful and someone who isn't is never about

their knowledge or their strength.

I see this with my students all the time. It's because they refuse to give up. Newt Gingrich said, perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did, right? Now, you can have ordinary talent, you can have ordinary strength, you can have ordinary IQ, but if you have extraordinary perseverance, there is nothing you can't do. Now there's a book called Three Feet from the Gold, which speaks about how many people will give up on their dreams.

You know, when they're so close to success, it's a sad book actually.

It's about a minor that had a, he was like three feet from a big gold line, and he gave up on his claim and someone else went in there and became very, very wealthy.

You know, the sad reality is many people don't realize how close they are to success when they

give up. And that happens because of a lack of will and perseverance.

You know, there's a quote which says, don't be discouraged because it's often the last

key in the bunch that opens the lock. For me personally, I've been on the verge of bankruptcy

with a business that I didn't give up on and it turned it into a $10 million business with 60 employees that I sold a few years ago. Now, Albert Einstein used to say that it's not that he's so smart, it's just that he stayed with problems longer. I don't think that's entirely true because he was freaking brilliant, but the point is he never gave up on something.

And you've heard me say it's not a failure unless you give up or you don't get the lesson.

You know, when you have a setback, I call them seminars. It's only a failure if you stop trying.

And remember this, a river will cut through any rock not because of its strength, but just because of that perseverance. You know, perseverance, again, is getting knocked down 99 times, getting up 100. Now, it's important to know this as well, my friend, and that is you may have to fight the same battle more than once, which is why so many people give up. But you have to say to yourself, I may not be there yet, but I get closer every single day. And most of the most amazing things on this planet

were accomplished by people who refused to give up, even when it seemed like there wasn't any hope.

Dr. Martin Luther King has this great quote, which is, keep climbing. If you can't fly, run. If you

can't run, walk, if you can't walk, crawl, but keep moving forward. So how do you build and develop

perseverance? Well, first of all,

you need to know exactly what it is you want. You need to have carefully written, concise, and

measurable, short and long-term goals. Then you need to know why those goals are an absolute must.
