Welcome to another podcast.

Today I want to talk about Operation Fast and Furious.

I know a lot of people are still following this scandal almost a decade later.

Probably a lot of you listening to this podcast right now are among

them. By way of background, Fast and Furious was a story that I helped break as an investigative

correspondent at CBS News.

I got an on-camera interview with a sitting agent from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,

and Firearms, John Dodson. Dodson was blowing the whistle on what he thought was a crazy operation in which federal agents, ATF, were encouraging gun shop owners in the United States to sell weapons to known cartel traffickers.

Operation Fast and Furious allowed thousands of assault rifles and other weapons

to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

When exposed, it was supposedly part of a hair-brain scheme on somebody's part that would ultimately result in

taking down a kingpin of a Mexican drug cartel because these weapons would turn up in their hands.

The plan never made sense, and in fact, they never did take down a kingpin.
