There are several ways for states to make elections faster, more secure, all the

while extending the franchise to more eligible people.

But the misconceptions around Election Day to say nothing of conspiracy theories mostly

born of a poor understanding of voting need to be dispatched.

Cato's Walter Olson explains some key and vetted ways to increase efficiency, speed, and security

of elections.

The health department goes into restaurants,

and they go places that we can't go.

They go into the kitchen, and they issue ratings

that they stick on the front of the restaurant and the point of that is to one of course

evaluate the things that we can't evaluate but also to give the public confidence that when they walk into this place that that A rating has some sort of merit,

that there's some truth to it, that they're not doing things to your food that you would find highly objectionable.

And in elections there's that similar sort of information asymmetry that is

voters go, they vote, they walk away, and then they don't necessarily know and probably shouldn't

be privy to every single element how those vote totals are determined. But public confidence in elections is so

so important. So when you look at this issue and you have on behalf of the state of

Maryland and other policy

writing that you've done how do you approach that issue? First I try to be

reassuring about the fact that for the most part all along we've had better

controls in place than people may realize.
