Summary

Determined batting by Ben Stokes and Will Jacks at least took this 2nd Test into the final session of the 4th day at the Gabba. But from the moment England dropped five catches to allow Australia to make over 500 the barbequing of the English torso on the Brisbane coals was underway. Simon Hughes and Simon Mann hear from a sombre Ben Stokes and an ecstatic Adam Gilchrist in reviewing the match. Australia now have one hand firmly on the Ashes urn after only six day's cricket. #ashes #england #australia Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Oh, late swing for Anderson now. Was that out? It is out.

Stokes flashes it away, through the covers for four, and England have won the match.

Hello, welcome to the analyst at the Ashes with me Simon Hughes. And I'm Simon Mann.

0:28.6

Do you want the bet fair odds on the Ashes prospects?

0:32.6

Well, they're not good for England after that eight wicket defeat by Australia inside the fourth day.

0:38.3

I mean actually England kept it going a bit longer than perhaps we both thought in a way.

0:42.3

It went on until it was nearly dark here so at least England took it well into the fourth day.

But sad to say with a two-nill scoreline now going into Adelaide in 10 days time,

0:53.3

the bet fair odds are that Australia to win

0:56.3

the ashes 93% and 4% England, 5% are drawn series. So, you know, it's pretty remote chance,

isn't it? Well, it's a familiar story and it was always the worry. I think that when England started the series here, that they had a tricky match in Perth where it's very bouncy. And it felt at the time, was that their opportunity? They had to start the series well. There was no Pat Cummins. And then they came here, look, we said it, against Australia, so good at home, against the pink ball and in Brisbane.

1:29.4

Perfect storm.

1:30.5

And it kind of worked out like that, didn't it?

1:32.1

Australia dominated the match.

1:34.2

England's 325 wasn't enough on the first day.

1:37.5

I felt it at the time.

1:39.9

Australia inexorably took a grip on the game.

And actually, fair play to England today. As you say, they extended the match. And I really like that partnership between Stokes and Jaxes. It's almost, it felt a little bit. And especially in the light of Stokes' post-match comments, it felt like a bit of an example to the dressing room as well. It did. It was very unbazable-like, if you like, or unlike this modern era, 96 and 37 overs, but it said this is the sort of way you need to play. Australia is a country. You've got to be tough. And actually, Ben Stokes afterwards talked about, you know, it's not a place for weak men. And there was a suggestion, I mean, obviously he didn't name names, but there was a suggestion

that perhaps some people in this dressing room are not strong enough mentally.

2:25.0

And, you know, he talked about, you know, when the game was in the balance, you know,

2:29.1

we seem to fade away.
