I want to welcome you to our show. I've been kind of musing all weekend about the idea of an empire in decline.

And it's not a very good thought, it's actually a very sobering thought. So I this is probably my second week in a row starting you off with a little bit of negativity. But that's not the intention. I think that it's we have to be aware of the situation that we face if we're going to be serious and if we are going to deal with the problems that are in front of us.

And one of the quotes that is stuck with me over the years, and I originally thought this was actually Oscar Wilde who who said it but I've been looking it up and it seems like it was Norman Mailer

is a quote about the great American cities and I want you to picture these cities in your mind as I read this quote to you

and we're to go on and discuss, we're going to discuss what's going on instead of what is said here. So Norman Mailer said, Chicago is the great American city. New York is one of the capitals of the world.

And Los Angeles is a constellation of plastic. San Francisco is a lady.

Pretty sad. I want you to kind of focus on that for a second. We're going to go and address each one of those cities. I think we have some things to talk about in that area.

100 years ago or so, 50, 80 years ago,

when these cities are no longer images of what the world saw them as.
