It's being called a watershed moment in higher education. The US Supreme Court voted 6-3

that affirmative action in college admissions is unconstitutional. It scraps decades of

precedent, and with that, universities can no longer consider race in admissions.

Justices considered challenges out of the University of North Carolina and Harvard.

A group called Student for Fair Admissions sued both schools, saying the UNC admissions policy

discriminated against white and Asian applicants, and that the Harvard one discriminated against

Asians. On the other side, the universities and their supporters defended their policies,

saying considering race is necessary to make sure their student bodies are diverse.

And they say race has always been just one factor in the process.

But most justices sided with students for fair admissions, who said the policies

amounted to racial stereotyping. Specifically, they said it violated the equal protection clause

of the 14th Amendment. That basically says everyone should be treated the same in similar

circumstances. Though justices who were against the decision also cited the 14th Amendment,
