The restaurant looked like a medieval castle and it catered to families.

On the way to the restaurant, we would pass the Arizona Hospital for the criminally

insane.

I'm not kidding.

That's what they called it back then.

My brother Keith would constantly try to scare me saying that the crazy

ex-murderous Winnie Ruth Judd lived there and that she had chopped people up

and mailed their body parts around the country.

What was more unnerving to me at the time was that Winnie Ruth was always escaping from the asylum.

And my brother told me not to let her see me as we passed

by or she would get me to. If you don't have an older sibling you might not know

how much they enjoy tormenting their

little brothers and sisters but Keith really had my number on this one. Many

years later I was working in the San Francisco Bay Area and I read in the paper that Ruth had once again

escaped the Arizona asylum and had been found in San Francisco.

She had been working as a caretaker to an older woman for many years

and the family loved her.
