Please be advised. Every Sunday when I lived in Arizona, my family used to eat at a restaurant called Green Gables.

The restaurant looked like a medieval castle and it

catered to families. On the way to the restaurant we would pass the Arizona

hospital for the criminally insane.

I'm not kidding. That's what they called it back then.

My brother Keith would constantly try to scare me saying that the

crazy ex-murderous Winnie Ruth Judd lived there and

that she had chopped people up and mailed their body parts around the country.

What was more unnerving to me at the time was that Winnie Ruth was always

escaping from the asylum and my brother told me not to let her see me as we passed

by or she would get me too.

If you don't have an older sibling, you might not know how much they enjoy tormenting

their little brothers and sisters, but Keith really had my number on this one.

Many years later I was working in the San Francisco Bay Area and I read in the paper that

Ruth had once again escaped the Arizona asylum and had been found in San Francisco.

She had been working as a caretaker to an older woman for many years and the family loved her.

I remember thinking to myself, wait a minute, an axe murderer is taking care of someone. But now looking back, I think my brother and a lot of other people might have had it all wrong.

As I began to research Ruth, I discovered that the truth behind

this case is even more disturbing than the myth of Winnie Ruth Judd herself.
