take you to other worlds, and bring joy. This is the tallest Christmas tree in New York. Every year, Penelope and her mom went to a beautiful farm to choose their Christmas tree.

Every year, that is, until they moved to New York City.

This year they would get their tree from a vendor who had set up shop at the end of their block.

I can't believe we're getting our Christmas tree from a street corner.

It's so... unchristmassy, cried Penelope.

Who's to say what's Christmassy and what's not Christmassy? Penelope. Who's to say what's Christmasy and what's not Christmasy?

Penelope's mom replied.

And besides, it's fun to try new things.

There were a lot of things about life in New York that were different from what

Penelope was used to. Instead of living in a house with its own backyard, she and

her mom lived in apartment 2B in a building with five floors.

Instead of driving in a car,

Penelope and her mom walked everywhere

or took the subway or the bus.

Instead of listening to Cricket Chirp at night, Penelope listened to the whirring traffic on the street below her window,

and the footsteps and clattering of the people who lived in the apartment above.

Her mom seemed to think that everything different about the city was exciting and magical. Penelope wasn't so sure. As she

squinted at the curbside Christmas trees, she noticed how neatly stocked they were.

They seemed a little crowded, which kind of made sense to Penelope.

After all, New York City was a crowded place. But this made the task of finding the absolute best tree seem almost impossible.
