0:27.0	Today we'll be telling the story of St. Leo the Great, also known as Pope Leo the First,
0:31.8	his feast is celebrated on November 10th.
0:34.6	Not much is known about his early life, but scholars believe he was born around the year
0:38.5	400 in what is now Tuscany, Italy.
0:41.8	By the time he was in his 30s, he was very well known, and when Pope 6th to 3rd died in
0:46.7	the year 440, Leo was unanimously elected by the people as his successor.
0:52.5	Pope Leo the Great had to deal with a lot of different groups of Christians, and as a result
0:56.5	really focused on emphasizing the importance of the papacy.
1:00.4	He strove to unify the church under the chair of St. Peter.
1:04.2	He is also well known for his role in the Council of Chalcedon, the 4th Ecumenical Council,
1:08.8	which made clear that Jesus is two natures, divine and human, united in one person, with
1:13.8	neither confusion nor division.
1:16.7	Leo was named a doctor of the church by Pope Benedict XIV in 1754, and over a hundred
1:22.6	of his sermons and 150 of his letters have still been preserved to this day.
