All Hallows Eve, or as you may know it, Halloween, is coming up at the end of the month.

So we thought it would be fun to tell a few spooky St. Stories.

But first, why would a Catholic show care about Halloween?

Well, November 1st is All Saints Day, which makes October 31st All Hallows Eve,

the holy evening before All Saints Day.

On All Saints Day, the church remembers all the holy men and women that have made it to heaven.

Then, on November 2nd, we celebrate the Feast of All Souls Day and pray for all of the dead.

All over the world, different cultures found different ways to celebrate these holy days.

In France, people would dress up in costumes.

In England, people would go door to door asking for cakes, called soul cakes, in exchange for prayers for the dead.

And jackal lanterns were a tradition that started in Ireland.

When Catholic immigrants from those countries came to the United States, their traditions began to mix and mingle.

And over time, All Hallows Eve started to look more like what we now know as Halloween in the United States.

These holy days were not meant to be morbid, but are an important reminder to pray for those in purgatory,
