On April 28th,

28th, 1982, 61-year-old Ruth Monroe lay on her bed, confused and terrified.

Her whole body was paralyzed, including her face.

Her left eye would not open,

and no sound came out of her mouth when she tried to speak.

Ruth's adult son, Bill, entered her room and sat down on the bed. He padded her shoulders as tears streamed down her cheeks.

friends a few months earlier when her husband introduced them. The ladies were

They got along so well that when Dorothea proposed that they start a catering business together,

Ruth agreed without hesitation.

At Dorothea's insistence, Ruth opened a joint business account

and deposited around $2,000 from her modest savings.
