Hello and welcome to a special Legacy Encore episode.

While we take a short break over the Christmas period, we're dipping back into the archive to revisit some of our favourite episodes.

And we can't start anywhere better than with Charles Dickens and a Christmas Carol.

I remember we recorded that for last year.

And we thought about how Dickens had been the kind of original substack poster boy,

someone who realized that the more he wrote, the more he got paid.

Dickens also kind of invented brand Christmas.

So much of what we think of as these ancient Christmas traditions from Time and Memorial were very, very clever bits of invention and branding by Dickens.

So what a modern author, an incredible writer, but also someone who understood how to package and post something to make it go viral.

It was so interesting to Dickens.

He's one of those classic people we've looked at in Legacy,

who are classics for a reason, you know,

full of big ideas, lots of surprising stories,

and all those rabbit holes that we both love disappearing down.

We sometimes get stuck down there for a little bit,

making life for our lovely producer, a little bit tricky.

But it's worth every minute.
