On this episode, I discuss enalapril pharmacology, adverse effects, drug interactions, and much more!



Enalapril has a shorter half-life compared to some of the other ACE inhibitors so it may need to be dosed twice daily in patients with adequate renal function.



Hyperkalemia, cough, renal impairment, and angioedema and four adverse effects associated with enalapril that you should monitor for.



NSAIDs and diuretics can increase the risk of acute renal failure when an ACE inhibitor like enalapril is being used.

All right, the drug of the day today

is enalapril. Brand name of this medication is vasotech. And as many of you may be studying

pharmacology could recognize, it has the P-R-I-L, the prill ending. So this is indeed an ACE inhibitor.

Ace inhibitors commonly used for hypertension, heart failure, post-MI,

proteinuric chronic kidney disease. Those are really the indications that you're going to see

in practice,

hypertension being most common, and then heart failure post-MI, definitely, you see a significant

amount as well. Now, I will say I see lysinepril used much more commonly. Clinicians typically

have more experience with that one.

There is a little bit of difference in kinetics, too, with anallopril.

But occasionally I do see analapril used.

Dosing with this medication, usually we're in the range of 5 to 40 milligrams per day.
