Summary

Dr. Phil continues his discussion on borderline personality disorder (BPD). He emphasizes that BPD exists on a behavioral continuum and can be present to varying degrees. Dr. Phil cautions against assuming that all individuals with BPD have experienced childhood abuse, as there are various factors that contribute to the disorder. He dispels the myths and misconceptions of this disorder including that BPD only affects women, noting that it is equally prevalent among men. Educate yourself and seek support if you are dealing with BPD in your own life or the lives of others. but you may not have them to the extreme or you might be married to someone or have a sibling

1:35.8

or someone you work with that has some of these characteristics, but they don't have them

1:40.5

at all where they don't have them to the degree that they would qualify as having the disorder.

1:46.4

So when I talk about it, I'm talking about it in the extreme when it reaches the level of being

1:54.2

diagnosable. And to be diagnosed, they are like nine characteristics for the borderline personality.

2:00.6

They went over last time. You can see them. I'll talk about quickly here in a minute. You only have

2:05.8

to have five of the nine to get the diagnosis, but we're talking here about patterns. You know,

2:12.1

somebody might have these traits or characteristics or symptoms pop up for a day or two or in crisis,

2:19.4

but not in pattern. So that doesn't mean that they have a borderline personality disorder.
