The power of the cross is not recognized, wrote one, by those who are perishing because they are out of their minds and act like madmen complaining and

rejecting the medicines which bring salvation. The very thing that brings the cure for everything that is evil is rejected.

We sinners will take just about anything and turn it into something that is for big smart grown-ups with positions of esteem and power.

If you doubt that, just consider what we have done with sports and games.

Can we even go to a little league game nowadays where everybody is simply enjoying the children at play, and that includes coaches and parents and all,

everything seems to drive everyone toward being the big smart esteemed powerful grown-ups.

Even the disciples couldn't help but get in the game.

At one point, they came to Jesus saying who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And calling to him a child he put him in the midst of them and said,

truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children,

you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest

in the kingdom of heaven.

In Corinth, some apparently wanted to make the gospel attractive to those big, smart, and powerful groups, you know, the grown-up types, the wise ones.

But there's really no dressing up the gospel.

We can never really make it presentable

or desirable to this mad, mad world.

For the word of the cross indeed is folly to those who are perishing, those who are being destroyed. But to us who are being

saved, that is those of us who are saved by God, the Gospel is the power of God.
