Hi everybody, this is Gadsad. On many previous occasions, I've explained the concept of costly signaling,

0:08.0

also known as Zahavian signaling, also known as the handicap principle. You can read this book by Emots and Abyshag Zahaviavi Zahavi signalling refers to a type of costly signaling.

0:26.6

Let me explain to you what that is.

0:28.6

And as you can see here, it shows the peacock's tail.

0:31.6

The idea basically is that some traits could not have evolved because they confer a survival advantage.

0:41.0

If anything, they reduce your survivability. So the peacock's tail is very burdensome.

0:49.3

It's hard to take flight from predators. It makes you conspicuous. And so, if anything, you should be less likely

0:57.7

to evolve that trait if it were simply for survival. But when we know through sexual selection,

1:06.7

there are traits that evolve because they offer a reproductive advantage.

1:11.9

But then why should it be so burdensome?

1:14.5

And so the concept of costly signaling means, in evolutionary biology,

1:21.8

means that a trait, in order for it to be an honest signal,

1:26.9

it has to be costly to the one who is emitting

1:30.2

the signal because otherwise, anybody could imitate it and do so in a duplicitous manner.

1:36.5

So if a female is trying to identify the really top contenders from the pretenders,

1:43.4

if the signal is one that everybody can copy,

1:47.7

then the female is stuck in a situation where she can't discriminate

1:51.4

between the different males.

1:54.9

But if having that particular trait or a particular behavior

2:00.0

is so costly that that itself serves as an

2:04.3

honest signal of my quality, then this is known as a costly signal. And so again, this is what

2:11.0

Zahavi signaling is because Zahavi studied, he was an Israeli ornithologist who studied
