When I first heard about this, I thought it was kind of creepy.

The NFL in the coming season will be using electronic systems to measure first downs.

I mean, literally my first thought was, what's next?

Robots standing behind the home plate instead of umpires to measure balls and strikes.

It just seems so clinical and taking a human element out of these games.

I mean, you can't hate the refs for a bad call on a first down if it's done by,

you know, some electronic system.

But then as I got the details, it's kind of hyped because the referees will still spot the ball.

You know, there's always this question of like how far did the runner go or, you know, was the quarterback pushed back when he sprinted toward the, you know, gaining 10 yards?

And that, to me, is the ball game.

At that point, what is the electronic system going to accomplish that human beings can't accomplish with that, you know, those sticks and chains that measure 10 yards.

I guess the one thing is it speeds up, speeds up the process.

The electronic system, about 30 seconds, takes about 75 seconds for these refs to trot on the field with those chains.

But the spotting is everything.
