Summary

September is winding down, but there’s still time to punch a tag. In this solo episode, Dan lays out his buzzer-beater tactics for the final days of elk season. He covers how to adapt when elk are worn down from weeks of pressure, where to find bulls when calling activity slows, and the mental edge it takes to keep grinding until the very end. If you’re staring at the clock and looking for a way to make the most of the season’s closing moments, this episode is your playbook. 💢 Discount Codes 💢   BORN PRIMITIVE OUTDOOR - 10% Off Code: ELKSHAPE PEAX EQUIP - 10% Off Code: ELKSHAPE CANVAS CUTTER - 10% Off Code: ELKSHAPE WILDERNESS ATHLETE | 20% Off Code: ELKSHAPE VORTEX WEAR | 20% Off Code: elkshape BLACK OVIS | 10% Off Code: elkshape SHEEPFEET | 10% Off Code: elkshape onXhunt ELITE Membership | 20% Off Code: elkshape Basekamp Quarter Pad | 10% Off Code: elkshape CrossOver Symmetry | 20% Off Code: elkshape Stealth Cam | 20% Off Code (non-cellular): ELKSHAPE20 MAGVIEW | 10% Off Code: elkshape MY MEDIC | 10% Off Code: elkshape DARK ENERGY | 10% Off CODE: ELKSHAPE GORUCK | LINK TO SHOP BLACK RIFLE COFFEE | 20% OFF CODE: ELKSHAPE20   🚨Video Production🚨 A CAM - SONY A1 BODY B CAM - SONY A7 IV W/KIT LENS SONY LONG LENS 70-200MM WIRELESS DJI MIC 2 STUDIO LENS 24-70MM DJI DRONE DJI ACTION 4 Learn more about your ad choices. guys welcome back to the final installment of our september series here at the old shape podcast we're talking about the last week of september we're talking about do or die tactics we're talking about the fact that peak rut could actually be this week you never really know depending on the area you're at but i've seen areas where you catch a lull into September, or it's like

0:21.7

the ruts just starting to get better each and every day. I don't know. My guess is that the

0:28.8

ruts actually better this week. I didn't want to say that last week's episode, but I think for

0:33.8

a lot of you, you're going to experience them in tremendous amount of elk rut bugling. And I think cows are getting bred this week for sure. And it's time to make, you know,

0:42.9

some pretty aggressive moves. So what does that mean? If it's your last week or your only week,

0:48.9

I've been in this position. One of my best memories is 2023. I I hunted, we made a film called I think 26 days.

0:57.6

I hunted like 26 days with having awesome elk hunting, seeing elk, being into elk, but never

1:05.4

letting loose and arrow. And then I think I finally killed an elk on day. I don't remember what it was,

1:10.6

but it was in Utah. And then I came I finally killed an elk on day. I don't remember what it was, but it was in Utah,

1:12.5

and then I came back to public land for the last couple days of season and ended up getting my

1:19.5

Idaho Public Land Bull killed. And all told, I think I spent 26 days in that unit trying to kill an elk. And it came down to

1:31.7

the last week. And so when I look back at that story, I went into an area that I had basically,

1:40.2

eh, wasn't super stoked on the first time I came in week one or two.

1:44.9

And I spent a few days there.

1:46.6

And I came back into that area towards the end of the season because why not?

1:51.2

And I wanted to just see if the elk rut had picked up, if more elk had moved in.

1:54.8

And sure enough, after hiking, honestly, hours and hours and hours pitching bugles, glassing.

2:01.8

I made it really far back in there.

2:04.5

And I could hear out bugling over to my left a mile or so away and kind of some

2:10.8

mountain goat canyon type stuff that was super steep.

2:13.8

And I remember sidehill in my way through a few avalanche shoots and getting over

2:17.4

into some like
