Summary

Elizabeth I’s propaganda images of Gloriana and the Virgin Queen have hugely impacted her reputation as the last Tudor Monarch. Yet the twilight years of her reign were both personally and politically difficult.

In this final episode in our series, Joint Chief Curator Tracy Borman is joined by renowned historian Dr Helen Castor. Together they contemplate which female relationships shaped this time, and ultimately, how Elizabeth I’s gender has shaped her historic image.

0:15.8	Well over the next three episodes, I'm going to be leading you on a journey to explore the woman herself.
0:23.3	Elizabeth I, the iconic virgin queen and the final monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

0:35.7	Because throughout her life, Elizabeth was surrounded by many different

0:46.5	these relationships that we can reveal the most about the real Elizabeth. These are the women

0:57.8	throughout Elizabeth's life, marking how they influenced her and what she learned from them.
1:05.4	We hope to question what myths have endured about Elizabeth, so that we can understand the

1:13.6	the woman under the layers of history. For each episode, I'll be joined by an expert guest,
1:21.0	and we'll be venturing into the very places where this history unfolded at Hampton Court Palace.
1:27.2	So, join me as we discover the real Elizabeth I and the women who shaped a queen.
1:39.3	We're here in the Great Hall at Hampton Court. It's nighttime on what has been a very gloomy late autumn day.
1:50.5	One of those kind of misty days where the cold seeps into your bones.
1:55.4	And in fact, we are recording this in the very month that Elizabeth came to the throne back in 1558.
2:03.1	And really the great hall is the perfect place for our final episode because it's where Elizabeth's story begins and where it ends.
2:11.8	It's the hall that was built to honour her mother, Anne Berlin, but it's also where her successor, James I spent his first
2:20.8	Christmas, was entertained by Shakespeare, and so it's all about the end of Elizabeth.
