Summary

Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO of Theranos, was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 11 years in jail. Her company claimed to be able to determine health issues from merely a pinprick of blood. She conned many famous, educated people, and the company was valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. Dr. Dennis Tourish is a Professor of Leadership and Organization Studies at the University of Sussex Business School and wrote a journal article on Theranos as an authoritarian corporate cult. Dr. Tourish was himself involved in a left-wing political cult and wrote the book On the Edge: Political Cults on the Right and Left with Tim Wohlforth. In 2023, understanding how corporations can act like authoritarian cults is vital for everyone to understand. Learn more about Steven Hassan and Freedom of Mind Resource Center. I do want to cite the original book that I read of yours that is called On the Edge,

1:24.2

political cults right and left, and even though it's written in 2000 I still think it has a lot

1:31.4

of relevance and I like that you cover left-wing cults and right-wing cults because like myself

1:38.5

you are concerned about authoritarian mind control groups und undue influence groups.

1:46.7

What else do I want to say?

1:48.6

So I invited you to do this one, Dennis, because of your research into Elizabeth Holmes,

1:55.2

the infamous CEO of the biotech firm Theranos, who was sentenced to 11 years in jail for fraud.

2:05.9

And this woman started this corporation at age 19 in 2003, managed to raise $700 million

2:16.2

in startup capital,

2:19.1

2:22.9

you said was $10 billion, and it went bankrupt in 2018.

2:29.8

And, yeah, she's going to jail,

2:32.8

and so is her co-conspirator, Ramesh Balvani, I believe, is his name.
