For most of those of us who create

horror for a living, it's much more than a job. It's a passion. For whatever reason, whether it's

being an outsider in our youth, feeling like the underdog or a monster, seeing familial

conflict all around us, or just because we love the rush of a really good scare, we care

about the past, the present, and the future of horror.

There is a long, straight line that runs through Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker to Stephen

King and Clive Barker and Paul Tremblay.

The line running from Paul Vaganer, Lon Cheney, Todd Browning, and James Whale threads through

Alfred Hitchcock, Jack Arnold, and Ray Harryhausen, around George Romero, Toby Hooper, Dariora,

Gento, and John Carpenter, through Joe Dante, John Landis, David Cronenberg, West

Craven, weaving around Peter Jackson and Sam Ramey, and ending up in our current

world horror leaders like James

Juan, Mike Flanagan, Ty West, and so many others. What's special about our genre and the makers

who live in it is their obvious passion for the subject, their knowledge of its history, and their

eager consumption of it. When I discovered during the course of our Masters of Horror Dinners

is that this group of filmmakers more than any other wants everybody to do well.
